Biopsies and Cytology
Fast, gentle answers when something doesn’t seem right
When a lump appears, a swelling develops, or an organ looks unusual on examination, it's completely natural to worry. The good news is that many concerns can be investigated quickly and comfortably using a simple technique called fine needle aspiration or FNA, supported by rapid in-house cytology.
At Pet People Vets, we can often give you initial answers within minutes rather than days, helping you make informed decisions without long periods of uncertainty.
Why biopsies and cytology matter
Cytology means looking at cells under a microscope. It is one of the fastest and least invasive ways to understand what a lump or abnormality might be. Many common problems can be diagnosed or ruled out straight away, allowing us to plan the right treatment path for your pet.
Our team performs fine needle biopsies every day and is experienced in interpreting samples on site, with support from external specialist laboratories for more detailed analysis when needed.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) — simple, quick and well tolerated
Fine needle aspiration is the most common first step when investigating a lump or internal abnormality. It involves:
Using a tiny needle (similar to a vaccination needle)
Collecting a few cells from the area of concern
Spreading these cells on a microscope slide for analysis
The procedure is usually painless and does not require sedation. Most pets tolerate it extremely well, even anxious ones. It only takes a few seconds.
When external laboratory testing is needed
Some conditions require the expertise of specialist veterinary pathologists. In these cases, we send samples to trusted external laboratories for:
Detailed cytology
Histopathology (larger tissue biopsies)
Complex or unusual cases
Second opinions
Results usually return within a few days, and we will always call you as soon as we have them.
In-house scanning microscopes for same day answers
Both our clinics have high quality digital microscopes that allow our vets to examine samples straight away. In many cases we can give you an initial impression of the sample within minutes, such as:
Benign fatty lumps
Infections or inflammation
Cysts
Possible cancerous changes
Skin conditions
Fast results mean fewer anxious waits and faster treatment decisions.
Tissue biopsies
If FNA results are unclear or if more information is needed, your pet may benefit from a small tissue biopsy. This may be done with local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic depending on the location and size of the sample needed. We will always talk through the safest and most appropriate option.
Frequently asked questions about pet CT scans
-
It is usually no more uncomfortable than a routine injection. Most pets barely notice it, but if your pet is prone to anxiety or doesn’t like injections, we are happy to give them a safe and short-acting sedation whilst you wait.
-
Sometimes a small patch of fur is clipped to ensure we can take a clean, accurate sample.
-
Many in-house cytology samples can give useful information during your appointment. External lab results typically take 1to 5 days.
-
Not always, but many do. Even harmless looking lumps can surprise us, so testing is the safest way to know what we are dealing with.
-
It is excellent for many conditions, but not all. If results are unclear, we may recommend a tissue biopsy for a more complete diagnosis.
