Dog walks in Putney
Wimbledon and putney commons
The standout spot for dog walkers. A vast expanse of open grassland, ranging woodland and nine lakes, all at a safe distance from busy roads – the kind of place where dogs can properly stretch their legs and feel like they're miles from the city.
With acres of biodiverse heath, woodland trails and wide-open space to roam, it's easy to lose an hour or two here without even trying. Dogs are welcome off lead across most of the common throughout the year, with leads required near the ponds during the spring nesting season.
Putney Heath and Common is just a 10-minute drive from our East Sheen practice and around 24 minutes from our Richmond branch.
Putney Bridge to Wandsworth Bridge
One of the most rewarding dog walks in south-west London, this easy circular route starts at Waterman's Green by Putney Bridge, crosses the Thames and explores the green spaces of Hurlingham Park on the north bank, before looping back over Wandsworth Bridge and returning along the south side of the river.
At 3.4 miles, it's a brilliant option for dogs and owners of all abilities – flat, well-signposted and with the Thames never far from view. Allow between one and two hours depending on how much time you spend exploring the parks along the way.
Putney Bridge Station is just a short walk from the start point – around a 10-minute drive from our East Sheen practice and approximately 15 minutes from our Richmond branch.
Dog friendly activities in Putney
Dog friendly Pubs
Putney has no shortage of welcoming pubs for dog owners, and a good few of them are proper independents worth seeking out. The Spencer on Putney Common is a Victorian tavern with a large sunlit dining room, a relaxed fireside area and a dog-friendly outdoor patio – the kind of place that feels like a genuine local rather than a chain and perfectly positioned after a walk on the heath.
The Jolly Gardeners, a short walk from the high street, is a firm favourite with the Sunday lunch crowd – a friendly local serving up traditional pub food and a great range of craft ales, with dogs welcomed without a second thought. And of course The Green Man on Wildcroft Road, right on Putney Heath, remains the go-to post-walk spot.
Independent Cafés
There are also lots of dog-friendly independent cafés to choose from in Putney and the surrounding area. The Dynamo is a popular spot with cyclists and dog walkers alike, known for its great coffee and relaxed vibe. The Savour offers a lovely neighbourhood café atmosphere with a focus on quality food and drinks. Blabar brings a Scandinavian feel to Putney's café scene, with a calm, welcoming space that's perfect for a post-walk sit down. And if you're after something a little more continental, Giuliano Deli-Café is a much-loved Italian deli-café where you can pick up great coffee alongside fresh deli produce.
For those heading out to Wimbledon Common or Putney Heath, the Windmill Tearooms is a must. Family run since 1969, it sits right in the heart of the common and serves up homemade food and drinks – from warming pies and jacket potatoes to scones, traybakes and their famous bread pudding. Perfectly placed for a mid-walk or post-walk stop.
All are worthy stops before or after a walk on the common or along the Thames Path.
Dog events in Putney
The Friends of Wandsworth Common Dog Show
One of south-west London's most loved community events, the Friends of Wandsworth Common Dog Show takes place every September on Wandsworth Common – just a short distance from Putney. A newer addition to the local calendar, it's already become a firm favourite with dog owners across the area.
The show celebrates the bond between dogs and their owners and the important role they play in the life of the common. Open to all breeds and abilities, it's a wonderfully inclusive day out – whether you've got a seasoned show dog or a loveable rescue with a wagging tail and absolutely no idea what's going on.
Registration on the day is just £3 per dog per category, with the show running from midday to 3pm. It's a brilliant excuse to get out on the common with your dog, meet like-minded pet owners from Putney, Wandsworth and beyond, and enjoy everything that makes this corner of south-west London such a great place to live with a pet.
Supporting Pets as therapy in Putney and beyond
At PetPeople, we believe that pets make life better – not just for the people lucky enough to share their home with one, but for everyone. That's why we're proud to support Pets As Therapy (PAT), a national charity that brings the comfort and companionship of animals to people who need it most.
PAT volunteers and their temperament-assessed pets visit care homes, hospitals, hospices, schools and prisons across the UK – including right here in south-west London. For many of the people they visit, time with a friendly dog or cat is a highlight of their week.
As a local, independent vet practice serving Putney and the surrounding area, community matters deeply to us. Our partnership with Pets As Therapy reflects that – we're committed to raising awareness of the charity's work, encouraging pet owners in Putney, Wandsworth and beyond to consider volunteering their well-tempered animals, and supporting PAT's fundraising efforts so this vital work can continue.
If you have a friendly, calm pet and think they might have what it takes to bring a little joy to someone's day, we'd love to point you in the right direction. Find out more at petsastherapy.org.
