Why we’re PetPeople –
a story from our founder
Dr Francesca Verney, founder and vet
I don’t think it is a leap to say that many people wanted to be a vet at some point in their childhood.
Who wouldn’t? Pets are kind, non-judgemental, inherently good, comical, varied, free. Who wouldn’t want to look after them as their life’s work?
But is our industry doing enough to retain that youthful enthusiasm and passion? And to support owners who see the magic of sharing their lives with their pets?
For various reasons, in recent times the veterinary profession has risked losing public trust.
At PetPeople, we’re not just dedicated to caring for the patients in our care – we want to reinstate this trust, and to allow our clients and our team to see caring for animals with the same innocent wonder we held in childhood.
How do we do this? With a different kind of relationship between the vet and the client. It’s not about being the cheapest practice, or the most academic clinicians, or having the best equipment – it's about being there in the moments of need, with honesty, understanding and compassion.
It’s the late-night euthanasia with shared tears, it’s the delivery of medications to the elderly client’s door, it’s visiting schools to talk with light about this wonderful, meaningful job.
Ian and I are in deep with the profession. We love the variety, the excitement, the care, the opportunity – and we want to foster this in others to create happy teams who do brilliant work and rebuild relationships with the public founded on love and trust.
Maybe we’re dreamers. But I think we’re right to be.
I believe we can create a practice that lives up to the dreams of a whole new generation of young people – a whole new generation of pet owners, and of vets and vet nurses.
A whole new generation of PetPeople.
