The CT Clinic

Our commitment to providing the best possible care for your pets has led us to the arrival of our cutting-edge CT scanner.

This machine uses multiple x-rays to create detailed 3D images of internal structures. This non-invasive imaging procedure allows us to gain valuable insights into their health without causing any discomfort.

What is a CT Scanner and how does it work?

A CT (Computed Tomography) scanner is a sophisticated medical imaging technology which is used in veterinary practice to provide detailed cross-sectional images of a pet's internal structures.

A CT scanner takes multiple X-ray images of a pet, from various angles around their body. These images are processed by a computer to create three-dimensional images, offering veterinarians a comprehensive view of the pet's anatomy.

In veterinary practice, CT scanning aids in the accurate diagnosis of various conditions, such as tumors, fractures, and internal injuries. It is non-invasive and relatively quick, making it an essential tool for obtaining precise diagnostic information. Using a CT scanner assists veterinarians in planning precisely tailored treatment strategies for each pet's needs.

Why are CT scanners used?

Although we can often determine a lot from traditional x-rays, ultrasounds, and blood work, CT scanning is the next step in advanced imaging to help us reach a diagnosis more quickly. It can be especially beneficial in the diagnosis of:

  • Orthopaedics issues (bone fractures/ dysplasia/tumours)

  • Head and spinal injury

  • Tumours

  • Respiratory problems

  • Foreign material (swallowed items/grass seeds etc)

  • Damage to internal organs and vessels.

Will my pet need to be asleep?

It is important that your pet remains as still as possible whilst the CT scan is taking place, therefore an anaesthetic or deep sedation will be required. Your pet will then be cared for in recovery by our wonderful nursing team before they return home.

Do I need to be a client of Pet People to have a CT of my pet?

No— you do not. Although of course we would love to have you on our books, we offer outpatient CTs for clients who are registered elsewhere.

How long does it take to get the results of the scan?

Once we have taken your pet’s CT scan we send their images to a specialist radiographer for interpretation.

We work with the fantastic team of radiologists at DiploVets to ensure we get your pet’s results as soon as possible. The usual report time is a few working days — however, if the case is truly urgent, or in emergency situations, we can obtain results more quickly.
